First, a pseudo three-state molecular switch between diphenylcyclopropenone and its dimer spirolactone is introduced to serve as potential EnOR logic gates. This simple system detects ultraviolet light, heat and Cu(I) as three input signals and the absorption band at 500 nm as an output signal. One state can be switched to the other via a transient red diphenylcyclopropenyl radical species only when external stimuli such as light and Cu(I) (or heat and Cu(I)) are applied simultaneously. Second, two o-hydroxyphenylcyclopropenone-derived spirolactones were synthesized using dimerization of 1,2-diphenylcyclopropenone cyclopropenone as a key step to investigate their potential thermochromic properties.
