To fully enjoy the pleasure while riding a bike, it is necessary to have a well planned bike trails. This research was aimed to explore the influencing factors towards bike riders’ affective attachment to bike trails. Given that the role of familiarity has not been addressed much in the leisure and recreation literature, three variables of recreation involvement, familiarity and place attachment were examined and their relationships were identified in this study. A survey questionnaire with convenient sampling method was adopted to collect data. The sample consisted of 405 bike riders on the Dapeng Bay and data collected were analyzed using descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Bike riders’ recreation involvement was predictive of place attachment, with the dimension of “attraction” the most powerful one; 2. Bike riders’ familiarity was predictive of place attachment, with the dimension of “education and knowledge” the most powerful one; 3. Bike rider’s recreation involvement was predictive of familiarity, with the dimension of “attraction” the most powerful one. The findings suggested that bike riders can obtain higher levels of place attachment to bike trails by promoting their recreation involvement and familiarity.
