This study used 502 R&D alliances within five industries in the United States from 1990 to 2006 as research targets. The results showed that the focal firm’s network centrality was negatively related to firm performance. By contrast, firm performance can be strengthened as the focal firm had higher structural hole scores. The absorptive capacity can moderates the relationship between network centrality and firm performance, but has no effect on the relationship between structure hole and firm performance.
