According to statistics from the Taiwan Department of Health, 88% of seniors live with at least one chronic illness. Most of the seniors prefer to live in their own home rather than in an assisted living facility or a convalescent home. Because of this, there is a great need and demand for development of systems of home health care for the elderly. Smart phones have various characteristics that make it a suitable media to transmit vital signs and provide long distance health monitoring and control. Besides the usual PDA or GSM capabilities, it also has Bluetooth transmission capabilities, a display interface and easy programming. In addition, the long standby time and wireless network capabilities make it especially suitable for long-term monitoring of vital statistics. By fitting the various medical equipment that take vital signs with a Bluetooth device, measurements such as blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and heart rate can be transmitted to the patient‟s Smartphone. With the appropriate Smartphone application, the data received can then be compiled and transmitted by the patient via wireless network to a remote server for statistical analysis and storage. Any abnormal values will be flagged and automatic emails or text message alerts will be sent to medical personnel, family or caregivers so that the patient can be followed up with appropriate care. Any helpful and relevant suggested action will also be sent to the patient as abnormal values are discovered. The transmission technology discussed in this article is Bluetooth IEEE 802.15.1. Some of its distinguishing characteristics include low energy consumption, a relatively simple structure, and low cost in production. These characteristics make it ideal for application in the home health care field. 王地河 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 73 zh-TW
