Thirty-eight valid couples participated in this research. Female participants (regulator) were randomly assigned to one of the emotion regulation strategies, including reappraisal and suppression. Male participants (partner) naturally discussed one of their conflict events with regulators. The results showed that in personal aspect, reappraisal regulators remained their positive emotion while suppression regulators decreased their positive emotion. In relational aspect, partners maintained their positive emotion when regulators used reappraisal strategy. On the other hand, regulator used suppression strategy would make partners decreased positive emotion and increased negative emotion. Between-group comparison showed that reappraisal regulators and partners got more positive emotion than the other group. The results indicated that the use of reappraisal strategy had more benefit on maintaining positive emotion, and using suppression had more damage on regulators and partners. Furthermore, assessment of relationship quality was affected by several variables. Discussion focused on the effect of emotion regulation strategies on emotion, and on the contribution of the results to the understanding of conflict in romantic relationship.
