How to understand the principle of the vioinistic playing, is the goal of writing this thesis. There were some early publications regarding the techniques in violin performance. In 1751, Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762) published the first systematically-written book about the study of violin performance, The Art of Violin Playing.1 Subsequently, in 1756, Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) also published a treatise concerning violin playing, A treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing.2 Based on the analyses of techniques and practice mentioned in these books, the violin teachers and violinists in the nineteenth century wrote many etude about the related violin techniques, which have been helping violin learners gradually and effectively improve their performing skills of both hands. And this is why I use these nineteenth-century violin etude as examples in this dissertation. The first chapter shows my research on the backgrounds of the nineteenth-century violinists and the features of their etude books. In the second and the third chapters, I classify and discuss the techniques of the right hand and the left hand respectively, and I also use various etudes as examples to analyze music and the performing techniques. The last chapter is the presentation of how these various violin techniques are applied in many well-known violin compositions. Through my research on the performing techniques in violinistic etudes and their use in music, a systematic display of different performing techniques and the applied musical examples can be seen in this dissertation. I hope that my research can help other students understand and practice violin techniques more efficiently, so fewer efforts will be required in their interpretation of music while the results should be greater. / 2011 Bo-Hsuan Huang Violin Recital The Program 1.
