博士 === 東吳大學 === 中國文學系 === 99 === This study aims to investigate the Taiwanese Minnan proverbs which are related to medical, disease and illness. The proverb has most possibility to present a language’s function and character in oral literature. Due to the strong relationship between proverbs and the culture it corresponding to,the study of proverbs has become an important role in the research of culture. The definition and interpretation of illness, including the explanations of causes of illness,related sickness, the description of symptoms,and the distinguishing whether a man is healthy or not,which are all closely related to each other,are usually impacted by culture and customs. As a result,proverb, culture, disease and illness can reflect and explain each other. Proverbs represent the culture of illness. So does it make us understand how the culture shapes human illness and cure illness. Disease is considered as a biological process in medical science, comprising the defect of personal body,the unusual of functions of organs, and unbalance of physical condition. Therefore,this dissertation is based on disease names,symptoms,causes of disease,patients,patients’ conditions,and abnormal psychological condition. Because of the theme of this dissertation is the cultural research of illness,in spite of the proverbs directly interpreting the issue of disease,the collecting of the proverb of the disease,the elaborating of issues,and the expatiation of the dissertation will not limited in the definition of disease in medical. Anything could determine a person’s lifestyle would have a great impact on one’s tendency of illness. This dissertation is divided into seven chapters. Chapter One, Introduction ,covers the background, problem statement, objectives, the significance and scope of the study. Chapter Two, The medical history background for the Taiwanese Minnan proverbs. Understanding the taiwanese health care system. Chapter Three, The study covered the folk therapy. Chapter Four will focus on the meaning of the body in disease culture. Chapter Five, the social interpretation of the diseases and medical. Chapter Six, the purpose of this chapter is discusses the most important links between the preserve one's health and culture. Chapter Seven will be the conclusion. The culture of disease in Taiwanese society is constructed directly or indirectly by 1,330 lines of Taiwanese Minnan proverbs. It is not only a symbol of the spirit and material world of one race,but also possesses the language which is explainable and analyzable. Proverbs provides a text for culture researching,it represents the answer including the way of problem definition,the knowledge system of solving problems,and the life sentiments of facing difficulties when Taiwanese Minnan group confronting illness and the related problems.
