Summary: | 碩士 === 實踐大學 === 時尚與媒體設計研究所碩士在職專班 === 99 === Animism is a belief in the existence of spirits, and has an influence on natural objects and phenomenon. In late 1960s, British archaeologist, Edward Burnett Taylor, linked animism to religious beliefs. He believed that animism was the source of all religious beliefs. People believed that anima (Latin; means soul) was existed inside all natural objects on the Earth. The followers of this belief thought that a tree, or even a rock, had the same living rights and values as human beings did.
Spirits are essential to life forms. Ancient tribes described the lives of human beings, animals, plants, and other life forms as the transformation of appearances of spirits. They thought that lives of all forms did not have a difference in values in the eye of the Creator. The end of a life might seem cruel; however, it is just one of the processes of a life cycle. Eventually after a death, there will be another life. As we evolved from apes, we gradually attained a lifestyle that is far different from the primal lifestyle which apes had. Other life forms in the nature began to look insignificant and less relevant to us. Some of us even treat other life forms like non-living objects, and consume them in a bold way. We used every possible measure to create a so-called better life, but at the same time consume natural resources endlessly. This has made our soil no longer be able to bear with our behaviors, and made the collapse of the world become real, not a myth. The collapse is happening now.
The argument to be discussed is the importance of the connection of life and spirit. From observing life forms, a relationship between life cycles and spirits is reasoned. The artist grew up in a forest, and had a deep connection with the nature. When she witnessed the collapse of the environment she was familiar to, and the cruelty the nature faced, she could not recover herself from the emotional strike. She wants to find a way to wake up human beings’ empathy instinct for the nature, and let the significance of the nature be seen again. She also hopes to rebuild and repair the relationship between human beings and the nature so that the ambience of all life forms can shine again in the near future.
The animation is produced with hand-drawn pictures. With an illustration of a magical world, all life forms are presented in imaginary. The story projects the connection between the nature and the human beings, and it also presents a perception of the spirit of life. The emphasis is to show the true inner feelings for the artist’s childhood memory of the forest by the imaginary world the animation brings. All matters have spirits. The power of the nature and the pulse of the spirit are hoped to be shown to human beings, and furthermore, to influence our lifestyle and behaviors towards the nature.
