| Summary: | 碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 社會工作與兒童少年福利學系碩士班 === 99 === This study aims to develop more awareness of new immigrants in Taiwan. The first goal of this study is to discover the reason why the new immigrants want to immigrate to Taiwan through marriage, and their own experience about immigration. The second goal is to find out the new immigrants’ challenge in Taiwan. The third goal is to discover the transnational links between new immigrants and their homeland. This study adopted qualitative research methods. Semi-structured in-depth interview were conducted to collect information from the foreign spouse family service center in Taichung County. Three respondents are from Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, they are volunteers in the foreign spouse family service center.
The results are as follows: First, the new immigrants came to Taiwan through marriage not only by the economic factor, but also multiple factors interwoven, such as the chain reactions and informal networks from micro-structure and the influence of a variety of meso-structures; Second, these new immigrants came to Taiwan dealt with seven challenges, including climate, cultural awareness, identity residence, language barriers, discrimination in employment, relationship with mother-in-law, and economic control by husband’s family; Third, the new immigrants’ transnational links including three aspects－economic, family ties and the culture of homeland. The more new immigrants tend to assimilate to Taiwan, the less transnational links occur. The new immigrants in Taiwan are generally in accordance with the future development of the children as their own whether to stay or return to homeland.
Based on the results of this study have the following suggestions: First, the proposal for the public sector: (1) the time to give up the nationality of new immigrants should be the same as new immigrants from Mainland China; (2) the elimination of discrimination in employment, creation of employment opportunities; Second, the proposals for non-profit organizations: (1) increase funding for foreign spouse family service center and staffing; (2) improve the social workers’ professional knowledge and skills in new immigrants welfare organization.
