And the British Overseas territory of Gibraltar to the south and also towards to Africa. Because of the strategic location, it has brought up the established and abundant history and culture of this country. Lots armies and colonists have came here for the benefits of it, that including Phoenicia, Carthage, Roman, Visigoths. In 711, the Arabs invaded Sapain, it was taking them seven years to conquered the Iberian Pennisula; they immediately began Muslim domination. In 756, the king of Arabs has chosen the city declaring the country''s independance. Until 10th centry, Spain had became one of the most prosperous places in Europe under Arab domination and this period also becoming a peak era of Spain''s history. In 1492, the Catholic Kingdom''s powerful army conquered the Arabs, unifying Spain and ending almost eight hundred years of domination. During the period of Arab rule, Spain accomplished many brilliant advances including medical science, mathematics, literature and especially architecture. Left behind were exquisite examples of architecture which today are the pride of Spain. It has showed a different view of the culture of architecture and it has significantly influenced Spain''s culture. The theme of this thesis is “Islamic architecture in Medieval Spain” and divides in three chapters. I''m going to first introduce a brief background of Spain''s extensive history and the Arab domination. Next, I will introduce the unique Islam architecture which is constructed and left by Arabs in every stages in Spain, I will describe and analyze their characteristics. Finally, I will thoroughly analyze and discuss the various architectural elements found throughout Spain, and examine their evolution thoroughout the various historical stages of Islamic rule.
