According to the requirement of garden master and designer, the plant, mountain, water and building are able to create different landscapes. In the past, most of all traditional gardens were used by personal family. However, there were many traditional gardens being opened to general people in the present age, and the structure of users were similar to those of modern garden. Besides, there have been some modern garden build in traditional style. Many archives tried hard to find out the style and space of building, mountain and water to preserve the traditional style and space character. But there were still seldom standards of planting layout. Having this in mind, this study emphasized on planting layout in Chinese traditional garden, as well as the plant character of ecology, literature and culture. The result was expected to serve as the standard of planting in traditional style modern garden. The purpose of study was then to find out the new way of establishing traditional style modern garden. Plant species, layout pattern of plants and the method of transformation of traditional garden to modern garden were discussed in the study. Based on the plants recorded in the references of traditional garden, the plants still in use in the traditional garden which is good in condition, the plant species appeared in Chinese paintings and Chinese classical literature, recommendation of suitable plant species was made for Chih-shan Garden. At the beginning, Chih-shan Garden were divided into building, water, road, rock landscape. Planting layout, of Chih-shan Garden was then carried out. And then, charts were drawn to show the space relationship between plants and others element in landscape. Finally, plant species and layout for Chinese traditional garden were also discussed.
