Before human had written words, symbolic symbol came up with language and image, and used in different artistic field. However there are lots of story and some superstitious, mysterious colors. Since French poet Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867) had used symbolic symbol for his main expression, symbolism was first appear in the drawing world. It made the use of symbolic symbol in drawing reached a peak. Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), who has classical and mythological accomplishment, deeply affected by the symbolism. In many of his drawing, he used lots of symbolic objects. Although these mystic symbol were just acted as a foil, we cannot neglect their internal meaning. If we understood the meaning of the symbolic symbol, it may help us to get the artist’s ideas in their works. This essay will explore the meaning of the symbolic symbol in Klimt’s works. It will divided into two parts in order to analyze. The first part is the realistic objects in the works like snake, dragon, fish, flower, etc. The second part is abstract objects like cross, eye, scarab, etc. The author try to analyze the meaning of these symbols so as to understanding the allusion behind them, and the differences of meanings under the different culture backgrounds. The author’s purpose is can freely use symbols to express the creativity and techniques in self-creation, and develop the depth and range of imagism in the art field.
