Near the end of Japanese rule there were 944 elementary schools around Taiwan. Although the colonial government formulated architectural laws when it first began establishing schools, each school had distinguishing features in both layout and appearance. Therefore, this study mainly explores the factors that influenced school design variation. The scope of survey encompasses Yilan and Lotong and targets “public schools,” “elementary schools” and “women’s public schools” in the areas, building the development history of schools during Japanese rule based on literature, reports and magazines and a field survey. The schools’ background, land acquisition, building development and changes are explained and used as a basis for this study, which further analyzes factors that influenced school design variation.
