Among these, mass rapid transit (MRT) systems are the most efficient means of transport. However, close to 50% of traffic actors in Taiwan use private transportation as their main means of transport, and over 60% of these use motorbikes as their main method of transport. These modes of transport and the average amount of carbon emissions per capita have created a certain degree of hindrance to urban development. How to improve transport efficiency and reduce these hindrances are important topics in the development of metropolitan areas. The results of questionnaire surveys showed a gap between passengers’ awareness and understanding of the surroundings of MRT stations in Taipei and Kaohsiung City. In light of this information, researchers were able to understand differences in the awareness of passengers regarding the surroundings of MRT stations in Taipei and Kaohsiung. Through these differences, this study gained an understanding of passengers’ degree of satisfaction with regard to the travel environments of the Taipei and Kaohsiung MRT systems, and conducted analysis and comparison. Researchers examined whether differences in climate, environment, and habits influenced “perception of comfortable walking distance” or “awareness of living functions around MRT stations”. In the first research stage, the research indicator investigated was comfortable walking distance to MRT stations in urban planning zones in Taipei and Kaohsiung City. This data was compared with the total area of these zones. Results showed a difference of approximately 2 % in the coverage ratios of Taipei and Kaohsiung MRT systems in urban planning zones. The ratio of the Taipei MRT system was slightly higher, but not sufficient to be considered an absolute impact factor on the frequency of traveling by MRT in urban areas. Therefore, in the first research stage, this study used MRT station space and road intersections with high traffic volume in urban areas as targets of investigation. Results showed that in Kaohsiung City, over half of road intersections with high traffic volume were not within comfortable walking distance (within 400 meters) of MRT stations. This showed that in Kaohsiung City a majority of the requirements of traffic behavior have not been met. The indicator in the second research stage was number of MRT trips. This study investigated differences in passenger awareness of living functions in the surroundings of MRT stations in Taipei and Kaohsiung City, and the actual development limits of these areas. This data was combined with previous studies and the transit-oriented development (TOD) theory for research. This study examined whether the surroundings of MRT stations exhibited intensive and comprehensive development, and used the ampleness of living functions in MRT station environments to investigate methods of enhancing the utilization of MRT systems.
