Its brilliant complexity demonstrates the implicit technique of the craftsmen and the inheritance of traditional woodcarving composition. The progenitor of fantasy war fiction in the Ming Dynasty is Fengsgen Yanyi, whose characters include deities, common mortals and peculiar monsters. The eccentric outfits they wear, the objects they hold, and the beats they mount on exhibit great diversity and win great popularity in folk culture. The stories are not only well-received by the general public, but also possess didactic and entertaining functions. Just as the plots chosen to be presented in Yuan-Guang woodcarving vary, the arrangement of characters and backgrounds differ. Together they enable the artistic themes to demonstrate great diversities. This thesis incorporates the research findings gathered from field studies, integrating the most common themes in Fengshen Yanyi, as well as the analysis of related literature, theoretical study and graphic interpretation of composition theories, to sort out the selection, recognition, interpretation and arrangement of characters and storylines. The author also made an effort to compare the figurative design, scenic composition and main ideas in both the mythological themes in Fengshen Yanyi and the historical themes in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is the author’s expectation that the integral analysis of Yuan-Guang woodcarving presented in this study could be further studied by aspiring researchers in related fields, so that the contents of the subject matters in Fengshen Yanyi represented in other structural components could develop into completion. In addition, the research seeks to lay a thicker foundation for Taiwanese cultural contents, in order for the system of traditional decorative art to gradually extend its branches, thus passing on the cultural calling that is unique to Taiwan.
