With the opening of direct commercial flights, tourism in Taiwan has also benefited from the arrivals of Mainland Chinese tourists. The purpose of this research is to understand the attractiveness of cultural tourism within Taipei and its surrounding area towards Mainland Chinese tourists. To conduct this research, three methods were used to gather information and derive insights: 1. Comparative literatures in cultural tourism 2. Survey (Chinese questionnaire, with both quantitative and qualitative questions) 3. Statistical analysis The surveys and interviews were conducted in Taipei with Mainland Chinese nationals who were visiting Taiwan, with a survey return rate of 85%. The main conclusions from this research are: 1. The majority of the interviewees were between 21-30 years old. Most of the interviewees had higher education with a stable income source. Above 90% of those interviewed were visiting Taiwan for the first time and indicated willingness to recommend friends and relatives to visit Taiwan. 2. Based on research literature, the cultural tourism attractions in and around Taipei are classified as: Museums, Historical Monuments, Temples, Hotsprings, Old Streets, Festivals, Performing Arts Troupes and Art Spaces. 3. Due to historical reasons, Mainland Chinese tourists see cultural tourism as the best way to better understand Taiwan’s history and way of life. As such, attractions that demonstrate Taiwan’s originality and cultural elements related to aboriginals are of interests to them. 4. The categories which interest them most are historical monuments, museums and old streets. The most favorite attractions include Presidential Office Building, National Palace Museum, Dan Shui Old Street. 5. Mainland Chinese tourists have little pre-knowledge of Taipei and her cultural aspects. Their travel experiences in Taipei are based upon the itinerary prepared by travel agencies. As such, their understanding of attractions not visited is limited. These include festivals and art spaces. 6. All Mainland Chinese tourists expressed an interest in revisiting Taipei in order to deepen their understanding of Taipei and its cultures. Their preferred method of future travel would be self-travel. Yen-Tan Lin, Ph. D. 林炎旦 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 116 zh-TW
