At the core of this research were the characteristics of responsibility and respect. During this research, the researcher encountered difficulties which required solving problems. Through the process of solving these problems, the researcher was able to grow professionally. The sample for this research was a group of twenty-six fifth grade students. It was collected over a forty week period. The methods used to collect data during this period included observing and interviewing the students. The data came from four sources: the teacher, co-teachers, the researcher, and the students taking part in service learning. The results were as follows: 1. With regards to the characteristic of responsibility, service learning had a positive effect. 2. With regards to the characteristic of respect, service learning had a positive effect. 3. The experience gained from promoting service learning resulted in the researcher’s own self-examination and professional growth. During the research, certain problems were encountered. Methods had to be created to solve these issues. From this, the following suggestions were derived: 1. Suggestions for the school: (a) provide awareness to both teachers and parents about service learning. (b) encourage teachers to use service learning, offer extra-curricular activities, and provide support to the school administration. 2. Suggestions for service learning leaders: (a) work together to approach issues from all angles in order to provide help and support for the students’ education. (b) enhance preparation and planning skills and put them into practice. (c) conduct a self-assessment and provide feedback in order to improve students’ learning during service learning. (d) improve leader’s skills with regards to conducting activities to help students’learning ability. 3. Suggestions for Future Researchers (a) establish a professional teachers’association to do research together. (b) double check the information surrounding those involved to ensure that the data is accurate. Tseng Jiin-Dar 曾錦達 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 155 zh-TW
