Through chorus, music educators can achieve the goal of education for all purposes. Choral education is popular in Taiwan, and it is the easiest and most direct way for elder citizens to participate in music activities. This research took an amateur chorus as a case and aimed to explore the elder participants’ learning process, motivation of participation, and reflection of learning as well as educational functions of amateur chorus. Research participants were drawn from “ Kaohsiung Han Sheng Chorus ”, who were aged over 55 years old. Questionnaire was first used to screen suitable research participants, and observations of rehearsals and semi-structured interviews were applied to answer the research questions. Interviews and observations were video-taped or audio-recorded, and researcher transcribed into words for on member checking. According to the results of data analysis, the conclusions were made as follow: First, the motivations of these elderly amateur chorus participants were divided into seven categories, namely (a) loving music and songs; (b) self-enrichment and life-long learning; (c) self-actualized; (d) making friends; (e) enjoyment of music; (f) spiritual sustenance and nostalgia belonging; and (g) studying with masters. Among all, a, b, c, d, were most often mentioned. Second, the learning of elder was categorized below: (a) using voice correctly to, sound young all the time; (b) practicing hard to show self-confidence on the stage; (c) making rehearsals essential in life and grasping this learning opportunity; (d) treasuring the rehearsal time, and to prevent aging and Alzheimer’s disease; (e) learning and extending knowledge from friends who shared the same value; and (f) learning from teaching. Educational functions of the amateur chorus for elder included the following four categories, namely (a) enriching music skills and providing performances opportunity; (b) offering diverse information of art appreciation; (c) enhancing social skills and expanding social experiences; and (d) promoting more learning orientations, such as literature, language, interpersonal skills and so on. Finally, based on research findings and reflections, the researcher made recommendations for education administration, the conductor of amateur chorus, elderly people with their families, and the future researchers.
