Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 社會與區域發展學系碩士班 === 99 === White-Skinned Attractiveness and Sexual Difference Abstract Since ancient times, the white skin has always been one of the requisites for beauty, which has urged women to unceasingly seek the pulchritude of whitening their skin. Beauty is originally a code word of feminization, yet the phenomenon of shaping a beautiful man arose in recent years under the prevalence of different cultural exchange and the disseminative power of mass media, which has made white-skinned men prevalent in the world. There is an argument of the skin color evolving following the preference of the opposite sex from the theory of evolution. In the theory of biological evolution and message, it stated that the skin color conveyed the message of health and fertility. Thus, this research is intended to explore the male and female viewpoints on the attractiveness of skin color of both sexes as well as to compare whether there is a threshold of skin color of both sexes between men and women. This research is conducted aiming at the undergraduate students of 2010 academic year from National Taipei University of Education through a modification of the questionnaire survey for the attractiveness of skin color of both sexes from the viewpoints of female undergraduate students developed by Chang, Jung-Fu and some other persons (2009). The research results are shown below: There is no difference in the attractiveness of female skin color between the viewpoints of both sexes. They all favored the white-skinned women. While women are seeking whitening their skin, they also consider whether their skin looks healthy. Yet there are some significant differences in the attractiveness of male skin color between the viewpoints of both sexes. Women prefer swarthy men over men. It shows that women are much concerned about whether men are healthy and strong or not. Both sexes are unanimous in the threshold of the attractiveness of skin color. The whiter women are, the more attractive they are. The darker men are, the more attractive they are. Yet the attractiveness of skin color exists within a certain range. If exceeding the range, the attractiveness will begin to go down. Keywords: Skin color, physical attractiveness, sexual difference, message
