Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 社會與區域發展學系碩士班 === 99 === This study aims to use portable GPS (Global Positioning System) for map teaching to fifth grade students in the social study learning area. This study is a qualitative research, and the data were collected from cases under map teaching study. The research subjects were students taught by the author from Luchiang Elementary school in Luchou city, Taipei County. Through this study, the following conclusions were reached:
(A) The possibility of applying GPS into map teaching
After teaching, the researcher found that GPS was accepted by students. Although GPS is not highly used in teaching, students can learn well through appropriate teaching activities. More and more people are using GPS now.
(B)The teaching strategies include: campus location, campus treasure hunt, community treasure hunting.
(C) GPS used in teaching is helpful to mapping skill.
GPS can provide latitude and longitude data, as well as compass support to enable students to look for directions. With these practical experiences, students can understand latitude and longitude, the current position and the relative position between two objects. With the help of Google Earth, students can have more complete concept about latitude and longitude and the absolute position.
GPS map data provides an interesting and lively illustrations, it’s easy to learn. The researchers remind students to use the illustrations in drawing a campus map. Students make significant progress in the illustration ability after doing the test as well as in different proportions, large scale and small scale concept.
From the teaching experiment, it is found that it’s difficult for students to draw their own campus map at the beginning. After learning to use GPS, students learn about single GPS positioning on campus and mapping, thus helped students draw their own school map more easily and they can finish a more complete map.
(D)Enhance the ability of children’s map capacity in implicit learning
In the extended learning course, most students can discuss with each other, collect information through reading, in order to find a suitable location of the hidden treasure. This helped students develop the capacity of cooperative learning and increased the feelings of each other. From the designed topic, students understand more about their hometown enhances their feeling of their home and enhance the attempt to explore the environment. The treasure hunt accompanied by parents enhanced the relationship between parents and children.
(E)Provides another example of the social field study
It’s important to learn about people and its environment the social study field. This research, in teaching the concept of constructivism in instructional design, combined with a variety of GPS functions, increased lots of fun in map learning and increased the ability in making map. The whole process of teaching provides the opportunities for students to cooperate and explore the environment with each other. This helped students learn the relationship between people and the environment. I believe this study provides a model in the social study area.
