With the world's natural disasters continue to occur, abnormal climate and energy depletion, people began to focus environment problem. Shipping is the key point of the development of international trade. The ports lead the overall development of their port cities’ businessness. However, the over exploitation and operation have resulted in serious pollution problem. Presently many countries face port environment problems and serious pollution. How to implement environmental sustainability and maintain port economical development are included in every port’s important topics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the pollution generated by port development, via collecting the domestic and foreign port of environmental documents, information, as well as those studies of green port policy from many countries which have enforced green port plan and enact those regulations for the prevention of pollution. It also discusses the current environment policy of the world in order to create sustainable policy, reduce damage to environment. Through literature review and case studies, including those examples of Long Brach port, U.S.A, this study tries to summarize the objectives and analyze those policies relating to green port development. It also aims to explore those regulations provided by the IMO and find out how shipowners are required to response those requirements imposed by international conventions, including those requirements relating to ships and shipowners to use low sulfur fuel and avoid pollution port environment. Taiwan also face the same challenges and needs to implement relevant laws and regulations for green port. This study tries to provide relevant suggestions for improving port pollutions and upgrade environmental protection in Taiwan’s port.
