In these special areas, medical instruments for life support, characteristics of patients, and risks of patient transfer should be integrated in the safety assessment of shelter-in-place refuge. Based on the assessment, mechanical and electrical designers can create a safe environment when they plan and construct intensive care wards. In Taiwan, some fire compartments with good fire-proof design are lack of life-supporting medical instruments to sustain critically ill patents. Furthermore, rare researchers in Taiwan have reported related to the topic . Therefore, this study can help ward designers plan and construct intensive care wards in the future. This thesis consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 as an introduction discusses the motivation, scope, method, and research process. Chapter 2 presents literature review, some real fire cases over the past years, and a survey of medical life-supporting instruments in hospital. The review, survey, and fire cases form a basis of this study ― shelter-in-place refuge. Chapter 3 defines “special areas” and describes characteristics of patients and risk assessment of patient transfer and evacuation in emergency. Chapter 4 studies design and function of the mechanical and electrical life-supporting system. Then, the chapter will discuss the details in electrical power systems, medical gas, and communications, access control, and monitoring in hospital. Chapter 5 cited the construction of the cardiovascular center in a medical center as an example, presenting practical methods of mechanical and electrical life-supporting system design and optimization of fire compartment design. Then, all the studies in different aspects will be integrated to some practical results. Finally, chapter 6 as a conclusion gives suggestions to the future researchers relevant to this topic.
