Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 運動與休閒管理研究所 === 99 === Through qualitative descriptions and in-depth interviews, the present study aims to explore how a street dancer had faced all the twists, turns and transition points in life, and continuing to walk on the road of his dreams then seeking self-fulfillment. By examining his career development, we tried to gain insight into the real senses of some important events such as significant people in the dancer’s life, critical incidents, the pros and cons of street dancing, and the way he gave meaning to and accounted for his decisions. The stories showed how young people, like the dancer, learned about himself and interacted with others in the prevailing trend of pop culture and made their dreams come true.
Conducting the method of descriptive research, this paper was accomplished by referring relevant documents on pop culture and street dancing. Furthermore, we had interviewed six senior street dancers to consolidate the observations and findings. In conclusion, the dancer’s career development can be divided into three stages. The first stage is the longing for pop idol outlooks, building a slender body, and seeking for one’s own distinctive originality, which sparked his dancer dream. The second stage is about the unfaltering passion in the face of undesirable bonds of convention. The last stage is relevant to the self-reflection and self-motivation. The dancer faced the challenges, and aiming for success.
The dancer in the present case study could combine personal hobby, profession, and responsibility on career together to accomplish his own dream which was an encouraging story for teenagers nowadays. Changing from subculture to mainstream culture in the future, this case study on the development of street dancing may contribute to further study on dance art, dance education, and dance culture later.
