William Campbell , an English Presbyterian missionary, his life career in Taiwan. Rev. William Campbell, a Scot, who came to Taiwan in December, 1871 as a missionary for forty-six years. Rev. William Campbell was another University of Glasgow and the Free Church Divinity College graduate. As a pastor and the member of Royal Geographic Society, he was made to care the weakness and adventure the places where nobody had visited. He was involved in numerous activities during his stay in Taiwan. They are classified into three categories in this thesis, namely, missionary work, blind education and writings. His activities have left profound influence and significant impact on Taiwanese Christianity, development of blind education and preserved historical documents .This study appeared the history of Taiwanese Pioneer won’t be completed without foreign missionaries. Chapter 1: Introduction explains the motivation and purpose of choosing this title for the thesis and the related historical materials referred. Chapter 2: The background of Taiwan and preaching Christianity is introduced and explained. The context of Taiwan at the end of Manchu Dynasty when Christianity was spread to Taiwan, e.g. politics, security, public health, transportation, the attitude of the people towards the foreign religion and the missionary achievements in Taiwan before Rev. William Campbell. Chapter 3: Rev. William Campbell’s missionary activities are approached, firstly, his life, his missionaries activities and then the areas where he preached. As to the important incidents related to Rev. William Campbell, such as Baishuixi Incident. Inevitably the incident was discussed why the conflict happened and the process. It was also compared the opinions of the incident among the Chinese officers; British consuls and missionaries. Chapter 4: The development and the content of Ang-kong-su from Manchu Dynasty, Japan to now and the effects of the blind education are all discussed in this chapter. The study displayed how Rev. William Campbell influenced the blinders’ subsistence and social status Chapter5: Many writings of Rev. William Campbell are introduced and classified into three categories in this chapter, the period of Dutch governance, Presbyterian churches and edited Taiwanese dialects.
