Mobile devices have recently been integrated in outdoor observation activities to investigate their innovative learning effects. However, due to the unrestricted nature of outdoor activities, the observation learning design requires very explicit objectives to guide and to monitor students’ learning progress. Students’ knowledge structure is an important criterion for science education. The purpose of this study is to develop a learning and assessment design for knowledge construction of mobile ecology observation for elementary school students. Forty eight 5th graders participated in this study. The concept map tasks were developed to scaffold the students’ knowledge construction. The results of the Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) analysis reveal that the growth slope of the ecology knowledge structure assessment is significant for all students (μ=1.07, p<.05), suggesting that the concept map embedded worksheet design is effective for guiding and supporting students’ knowledge construction progress. The portfolios of three participants are also discussed to contrast the differences in knowledge structure progress profiles derived from students’ ecology observation records. The characteristics of different revolution patterns partially support the process and instruction validities of the ecology knowledge structure assessment design.
