Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 諮商與輔導學系碩士班 === 99 === The purpose of this study was to listen to the resilient stories of maintained smoking quitters and have an in-depth understanding of their experience of maintained smoking cessation behavior and resilience experiences. This study used narrative research approach and the data was collected by in-depth interview and analyzed in a “Holistic-Content” perspective. The conclusion was as follows:
1. The process of the individuals from smoking to non-smoking
(1) Smoking behavior was an expression of the state of life. When life alters, smoking behavior also changed. So if we want to understand the individual''s smoking behavior, we certainly can not ignore the overall context of his/her life.
(2) Smokers show cross-type smoking behavior which influences the complexity of motivation to quit.
(3) To explore the factors of continued smoking can help us see the needs behind the smoking behavior and therefore contribute to practical work.
2. The resilience experiences of the maintained smoking quitters
(1) The resilience process of the maintained quitters was the repetition of smoking and quitting but they gradually came out of the circle. There seems to be difference in gender of the resilient process.
(2) Government policies to restrict smoking not only increase, by social pressure, the possibility for smokers to quit but also reduce the interpersonal pressure on those who try to quit smoking.
(3) Failed experience of quitting smoking has its significance in resilience. The process of resilience is gradually accumulated by failed experience.
(4) Spiritual factors have a critical influence on resilience. They not only help individuals quit smoking but also help them maintain non-smoking.
(5) In response to individuality, the quitting method designed to suit individuals help them reach resilience.
(6) Resilience brings changes to individual’s self-image and when feeling the change, the individual, in turn, becomes more capable of maintaining smoking cessation behavior.
In the end, the paper presents some suggestions for future research and practical work based on the conclusion of the study.
