Autism has profound effects upon both social interactions and sensitivity to sensory stimulation in persons with such conditions, often making it uncomfortable or impractical for them to turn to other human beings for comfort. Grandin is a person with high-functioning autism, using her own hug machine on a regular basis, to provide herself the deep touch pressure necessary to relieve symptoms of her anxiety. The study on the efficacy of Grandin's Hug machine, which was held on the school for students with special needs, involving five students with autism, aged from twelve to nineteen. The subjects in the study were treated with fifty psi pressure and then maintained for ten minutes each time when using the Hug machine. This study took change in blood pressure, pulse rate and the Behavioral Relaxation Scale score after using Grandin's Hug machine as outcome to assess the effect of anxiety in the subjects, found a reduction in pulse rate and the Behavioral Relaxation Scale score but no effect on blood pressure.
