Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北護理健康大學 === 聽語障礙科學研究所 === 99 === The purpose of this study is to investigate how subjects who have had a right hemisphere stroke process connotative and denotative meanings of words. Nineteen subjects with right hemisphere stroke (RHS) and nineteen normal subjects were given a word-dyad task where they had to decide whether or not there was a semantic relationship between two words. The word-dyad task involved three types of semantic relationships, metaphoric, associate of the primary non-metaphoric meaning and no semantic relationships, which are constructed by adjectives and nouns.
We examined the differences between subjects' performance on each semantic relationship task. Results revealed that RHS subjects are comparable with normal subjects on judging all semantic relationships. Furthermore, there is a medium positive correlation between cognitive and the processing of connotative and denotative meaning of words. Besides, the behavior observations of subjects with RHS are discussed.
The absense of a double dissociation between the two groups does not support the hypothesis of a specific contribution of the right hemisphere to the processing of the metaphoric meaning of words.
