According to each individual member’s background knowledge we predicted their ability to provide care for HIV/AIDS patients. The survey instrument utilized in this study was the knowledge needs of nursing staff members in providing nursing care for HIV/AIDS patients. The sample was made up of nursing staff members in a medical center. The content of the questionnaire was evaluated using the experts’ validity and internal consistency Cronbach's α for validity and reliability degree test, using stratified random sampling. There were 556 questionnaires sent out and 546 questionnaires were returned completed. The return rate was 98.2%. The return data was analyzed with SPSS15.0 software package for descriptive statistics, chi-square test, ANOVA, logistic regression analysis. The results were as follows: (1) the average score for knowledge needs of staff members to provide nursing care for patients with HIV/AIDS was 4 points or above (the maximum being 5). According to the average score ranking, the first three highest variables were the follow-up treatment of the victims after sexual assault, prevention of injury (ex, sharp objects, exposure to infected body fluids)and subsequent treatment of patients with opportunistic infections. (2) Knowledge of HIV/AIDS nursing care needs varied due to the health care providers’ age, marital status, whether or not they learned about HIV/AIDS in their nursing school, and their position and total number of years of nursing care experience. (3) The most predictive variables in assessing their overall knowledge of what is needed for the care of patients with HIV/AIDS was age, marital status and total number of years of patient care experience. Hopefully these results can be of some benefit for both the nursing staff member in patient care and the hospital in planning in-service education programs and formulating hospital policy involving the care of patients with HIV/AIDS.
