In terms of the growth background of Huang Kuang-Nan, he was born in the poor countryside in the end of Second World War, which made he devote himself to the flower-and-bird painting since he grew in the nature environment. After graduated from National PingTung University of Education, Huang Kuang-Nan finally received a Doctor of Philosophy in Literature from National Kaohsiung Normal University with great passion for art, although he lived in poverty. Due to many mentors’ support and guidance, Huang Kuang-Nan deeply appreciated their help and decided to devote his whole life to teaching. While he was the curator of Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the curator of National Museum of History and the principal of National Taiwan University of Arts, his wisdom, efficient creation and subtle feelings made him finish numerous works and create a fresh and unique style of painting. As for the concepts of the ink painting art of Huang Kuang-Nan, he thought that the works not only reflected the author’s emotions, knowledge and personality, but also had a consistent association between the author’s growth environment and life experience. Moreover, he pointed out that the works should link up the social contexts as well as reflecting the spirit of the era. Based on these concepts, he took the eastern aesthetics as the foundation, absorbed the western aesthetics as well as the essence of the modern art, and anticipated this combination would represent the brand-new and lively feature of Chinese painting. As for the characteristic of Huang Kuang-Nan’s art works regarding ink painting, it could be divided into five stages according to the influence factor and the style of painting. First, it’s “literati painting” period from 1959 to 1971. His drawing skills were deeply affected by some famous teachers during this period. The theme of ink painting involved in sketches and added personal emotions to present scenes. Second, it’s “new literati painting” period from 1986 to 1993. Huang Kuang-Nan who was influenced by western painting tried all kinds of drawing and abstract forms. Third, it’s “symbol” period from 1986 to 1993. His art works which was influenced by modern art were gradually in two dimensions instead of three dimensions. Fourth, it’s the early period of “image constitution” from 1986 to 1993. The forms of drawing which was influenced by modern art became more diverse then the previous periods. Fifth, it’s the late period of “image constitution” from 2004 to 2009. The forms of drawing tended to reappear eastern free lines. Based on the above analyses and discussions, it could be concluded that the characteristic of Huang Kuang-Nan’s drawing as a whole is (1) the constant theme of the memory for childhood in the countryside (2) full of the spirit of “literati painting” through the five periods (3) well designed for his works (4) contextual in terms of the form of drawing (5) taking the eastern aesthetics as the foundation with the application of the western aesthetics (6) attempting to experience all kinds of drawing.(7) involving the cultural aspect. As for the achievements and the influences of Huang Kuang-Nan’s art works, the researcher pointed that (1) he provided another method for the changes of flower-and-bird painting (2) he combined eastern aesthetics with western art to form his own style for ink painting (3) he had great achievements in terms of arts administration (4) His students achieved remarkable success as well (5) he wrote quantities of qualified art writings and essays.
