The narrative study was aimed to illustrate the students’ experiences of ecological learning process as well as their attitudes towards environment conservation during the learning activity. The subjects in this study were four sixth-grade students of a primary school in Hengchun district. During the series of activities which were designed mainly based on Flow learning, the students were expected to explore the natural ecological environment in their hometown and further to motivate them to make observation with their own senses. Through the experience of natural exploration, the students was able to develop positive attitudes, to cherish nature resources, to respect the nature and to protect the environment with actions, therefore, to achieve the goal of promoting the positive attitudes toward ecology conservation.
The data collection included video recording, the teacher’s teaching reflection and interviews of students and parents before and after the series of activities. The qualitative data were transcribed, categorized and analyzed with focuse on the students’ dialogue and interaction. In order to present the students’ learning procedure completely and verify the change of students’ attitudes towards ecological environment conservation, data from different sources were cross-analyzed to interpret students’ experience and further to enrich the description of students’ learning results.
According to the data analysis, findings are listed as below:
1. After a series of learning activities of ecology, students improved their knowledge of wildlife and environment conservation as well as the impacts of global warming on creatures.
2. After a series of learning activities of ecology, students realized construction and visitors result in negative effects on ecological environment.
3. After a series of learning activities of ecology, students promoted their appreciation of the natural beauty and also possessed cherishing on the nature.
4. After a series of learning activities of ecology, students were able to protect the nature with action in their daily life.
5. Such an experience of ecological explorative activities benefited specific student in controlling his temper and nurturing his empathy. Furthermore, the activities also helped the student to build the conception of team-work and personal relationship.
