However, the compilation of textbooks and lesson plans of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language (TCS/FL) in the classroom differs so much from real life interaction that it often confuses the learners. Take guan this character as an example, its sound is quite familiar to students but its meaning may not be fully understood by them. Besides, the negative form of guan, bu guan, has more than one meaning; sometimes, the meaning of guan is quite similar to that of bu guan. For learners’ to achieve efficient learning, and for teachers’ to thoroughly understand the diachronic and synchronic information about guan, I collected, analyzed and examined this character guan, and sorted out the grammatical and lexical form of guan. I also looked over the modern-day textbooks, and provided some suggestions on teaching approaches.
