The study first explores the difficulties teachers may encounter when they design teaching activities and the strategies they may use to solve their teaching problems. The study also tracks how 10th Graders develop their concept during the teaching activities. Then the study analyzes the extent to which the teacher develops teaching professionism during the teaching practice. In this study, three teaching activities, which included “Sun Dogs”, “Gold Purity” and “Electric Readers”, were designed for 37 10th graders in a senior high school in Kaohsiung City. Each activity involved two-hour instruction, six hours in total. Then the researcher collected worksheets, conducted teacher-student interviews and kept reflective journals for further reviewing the design of teaching activities, student development and teachers’ professional development. Three main findings in this action research are as follows: (1) it is feasible to integrate science news into teaching activities; (2) teaching activities based on science news help to construct students’ ability of identying scientific issues; (3) the teacher in this research is able to enhance teaching professionism by designing related teaching activities. Lastly, according to the results of the action research, the researcher makes some suggestions on the design of teaching activities, on the implementation of teaching activities, and on further research for the reference of the teachers who are likely to involve science news in their teaching practice.
