Summary: | 碩士 === 高雄師範大學 === 工業科技教育學系 === 99 === The purpose of the thesis was to examine the effect on the communication and expression of an autistic child through the use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and assistive technology equipment. The single subject of A-B-M design was adopted as a research method. The participant was a 3rd grade elementary child with moderate autism and echolalia. The independent variable was three AAC training projects (including PECS, the low-tech AAC training ,and the high-tech AAC training). The dependent variable was communication behavior;meanwhile, it is generalized to three living situations of general education classrooms, family and community. Data were collected during baseline, treatment, maintenance , and generalization phases. Visual analysis and C statistics and qualitative data were used to analyze the effectiveness of the training. The observational analysis and social validity analysis using interviews with related individuals were also supplemented. Based on the findings, implications for practice and future research were discussed.
The results obtained are as follows:
1. After the implementation of PECS, the participant’s responding expression using sentence strip was improved and maintained.
2. After the implementation of low-tech AAC training, the participant’s sentence expression using low-tech AAC was improved and maintained.
3. After the implementation of high-tech AAC training, the participant’s sentence expression using high-tech AAC was improved and maintained.
4. Using AAC could improve the generalization of skills in the untrained environment. In the conditions of experiment, the participant demonstrated generalized communication across settings and people. The generalization effect was more obvious at home setting, but still needed to observe his spontaneous communication in a lunchroom in the community.
5. The study showed a good social validity.
