Cities around the world are struggling to reduce their motor vehicles and corresponding impacts. This paper analyzes the factors of determining car ownership and motorcycle ownership for seven urban areas in Taiwan. The model is estimated with a set of panel data, spanned from 1998 to 2009. The result of regression analysis shows that the population density has a positive effect on car ownership and motorcycle ownership at the 5% significant level. Also, the coefficients on income and fuel price present a significantly positive impact on the vehicle ownership. However, the coefficient on the cross term of income and fuel price is significantly negative for car ownership and motorcycle ownership at the 5% level. The finding implies that the fuel price and income has a negative impact on reducing the marginal effect of respective income and fuel price on car ownership and motorcycle ownership. Meanwhile, the effect of the precipitation days and the amount of taxis are significantly negative. However, the MRT, the parking spaces with respect the road length and the trend of time are no significant. On investigating the effect of the amount of business bus on the vehicle ownerships, it presents a quite diversified outcome. For the car ownership, it indicates a significantly negative effect. But, it presents an insignificant effect for motorcycle ownership. Finally, it also shows that the both ownerships of cars and motorcycles are substitute to each other.
