After more than thirty years of revolutionary open policy, China has become a great power in both ‘soft power’ like education, economy and culture and military ‘hard power.’ The rapid rise of China’s overall national power will certainly impact the international system. Its strategy and action against the international community will also reflect on its foreign policy. Meanwhile, China’s research and assessment on international relations will have influence on its future foreign policy.
Adopting constructivism as means for this study with induction, statistical analysis, and analysis of China’s international relations development literature since its establishment in 1949, this thesis uses scientific and objective way to understand China’s international relations development trends. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to grasp the current situations and policy formulation background of China’s international relations through the systematic studies of its overall international relations development.
This thesis discovers China’s international relations development has always been affected by U.S. and Russia. The cooperation and competition between U.S. and Russia are still the biggest factors affecting China’s strategic decisions. Also, the development of constructivism in China has replaced neorealism and neoliberalism to be the most popular theory in international relations studies. In fact, under the influence and catalysis of its national power, Chinese schools of theory try to jump out of the framework learned from the Western international relations theory to establish the new Chinese theory with its own unique characters.
