The retinal detachments is well known sequelae of heavy myopia, is also a potentially blinding condition. Therefore, this study used the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), inpatient expenditures by admissions (DD) and registry for contracted medical facilities (HOSB) from 1997 to 2008.   The ICD-9-CM D Code of retinal detachment and defects is 361.00-361.09. The SAS 9.2 and SPSS 18.0 were used for data analysis.   This study showed that retinal detachment and defects inpatients were 42,014 cases (males 59.92% and females 40.08%) in 1997-2008, the average medical costs and the average length of hospital stays were NT$ 46,129 and 6.29 days, respectively. The incidence increased with age and the majority were mainly 45-64 years old (45.04%) and the effect of birth month was in risk who born in November (14.10 per 100,000 of population). In which inpatients, 10.09% had taken the cataract surgery, the lens replaced by other means (ICD V43.1) is the most important risk factor.   The risk factors for postoperative readmissions were male patients, length of stay more than 6 days, public hospital, and with comorbidity.
