C. .Francken and Gustaaf Schlegel, two Dutches, went to Fujian to collect and record Amoy dialect and Changchou dialect and respectively compiled 《Chineesch-Hollandsch Woordenbuek van het Emoi-Dialekt》and《Nederlangsch-Chineesh Woordenbuek met de Transcritie der Chineeshe Karackters in het Tsiang-tsiu Dialect》. The former dictionary is recorded and compiled words of Amoy spoken language, while the words of the latter dictionary are edited by Changchou written language. Despite different systems adopted, the values of vocabulary both embody their meaning of the time. This research aims to unfold a picture, the local society and culture of the time, through classification and analysis of words of the two dictionaries, and it tries to explain the values with which people observe the things. This essay deals with two main aspects. The first aspect about using vocabulary, is likely to piece together 19th century’s language in Amoy and Changchou, with an attempt to show what the words were used then, and to reflect the folk culture of the time. The second aspect is that the essay deals with the cultural value of the word formation and its underlying factors. The result of this research not only helps readers understand the daily words systematically, but also provides readers with a semantic analysis of words about human body, animals, plants, etc.
