Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 課程設計與潛能開發學系 === 99 === The study centers around the life of a seventy years old pastor’s wife. It is aimed to explore how she performed the role of a pastor’s wife and how she dealt with the disease of dementia in recent years. Through the theoretical lens of social role, I first described how she always went overboard to be a “perfect pastor’s wife.” With a view to self improvement, she was attentive to how members of the church thought of her to the extent that might be perceived as heavy-handed. Most importantly this research documented how the pastor’s wife of a strong personality was confronted with dementia in the last five years or so. As the disease progressed she lost some abilities, such as memory and taste. Despite the disease she is determined to live her own life with dignity and autonomy. She went through a great deal of disagreements with her daughters who believed they were able to provide her with a better life. While medical discourse has been attempting to delineate and de-mystify the progress of the disease dementia, based on my research experience I propose a frame of fluidity to understand how the patient was coping with the disease. She was working hard to maintain her dignity and autonomy as the disease progressed to take away some of her mobile and sensory abilities.
