Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of increasing the communication ability through gesture intervention program for a non-verbal autistic child. The study used multiple probe design across behaviors of single-subject experimental design. The independent variable was gesture intervention program. The dependent variables were three functional communication behaviors, including the requesting, seeking attentions, answering questions. Visual analysis, C statistics and qualitative information were collected for data analysis. Other observational data and survey feedback from teachers and parents were also analyzed for social validity. The main findings are as follows: 1.The gesture intervention had the immediate and significant effects on the non-verbal autistic child’s communication behavior of the requesting. 2.The gesture intervention had the immediate and significant effects on the non-verbal autistic child’s communication behavior of the seeking attention. 3.The gesture intervention had the immediate and significant effects on the non-vernal autistic child’s communication behavior of the answering questions. 4.Parents and the other classroom teacher have approved the positive results on gesture intervention for the targeted child’s communication behavior. Based on the findings of present research, suggestions for teaching and future research were discussed. Keywords:gesture, sing language, non-verbal child, functional communication
