The purposes of the study were to develop a curriculum based on a frame work of Montessori Method and to explore the effects of Montessori practical life-based curriculum.
The research methods used in this study were literature review, participant observations and interviews. The subjects of the study were three children who were enrolled in researcher’s class from September 2009 to June 2010.
The findings of the study were as following:
1. The Montessori practical life-based curriculum were effective on children’s developments of concentration, eye-hand coordination, independence, sense of order, sense of responsibility and sense of moral.
2. The curriculum were also effective in the development of taking care of self, taking care of others, taking care of environment, grace and courtesy, and body movement.
3. The result would be more effective, if the curriculum could be worked with family coordination. The inappropriate disciplines, such as punishment would delay effects of the curriculum.
Based on the results of the study, the recommendations were three folds:
1. It is recommended that public kindergartens apply Montessori practical life-based curriculum to enhance children’s physical and social development.
2. Public kindergarten teachers need loner-time span and systematic in-service training on Montessori practical life-based curriculum. On-site supervision is also very important to ascertain the process of curriculum implementation.
3. Public kindergarten teachers need solid training in child observation and recording techniques to strengthen their competence in formative assessment.
Recommendations for the future studies:
1. An impact study on adaptation, learning and interpersonal relationship should address to three subjects when they become first graders.
2. An in-depth study should address to subjects whose curriculum effects were delayed due to the personal emotion or personality.
