An absolute set of criteria, however, is still unavailable when introducing the idea of “localization” into art education at school; therefore, this study aims to investigate the correlation between the trends of contemporary art education and community-oriented art education, with the approach of action research. The researcher has developed an art education course incorporated with the local cultural resources of Jhonggang River Basin, with which it is hoped that students can improve their awareness and concern toward the community as well as enhancing their learning efficacy. This action research takes 29 students in an art-talented class as major participants. The course topic “Jhonggang River Graffti” consists of four units,including (1) “Exploring the Ancient Times”in which we comprehend local history and geographical environment through the art works by local artists; (2) “The Art Feast”in which we have a close contact and communication with local artists; (3) “ A Vigorous Tradition”in which we demonstrate how the local traditional enterprises and techniques can be converted into a brand new perception, and (4) “Art E-Learning”in which we utilize the web technology to record and illustrate the panorama in this area. With the accompolishment of the course, I have reached the following conclusions: (1) Community-oriented art education requires intense interaction and resource sharing with the community, along with profound action and concern; (2) Community-oriented art education can help improve students’ awareness and concern toward the community, enhance their learning efficacy, and evoke their thinking and creativity; (3) Community-oriented art education needs more emphasis on art creation, the practical feedback, and the pleasant interaction with the community. I sincerely hope, with this action research on community-oriented art education, that students can reveal their passion for the homeland and enrich it with their proficiency and sensation.
