In the past, it was a hunting zone for the Pinpu (Plain) tribes. But now it has become a town with most population in Taiwan in 2008. And only 4000 people are needed to be a county-controlled city. Therefore, the development and expansion of the population and the whole town are worthy of noticing. Yangmei Township belongs to Taoyuan Country after the R.O.C government moved from Mainland China to Taiwan. Before 1990s, its population had been the first in Taoyuan County, simply second to Taoyuan city and Jungli City. However, after 1990s, the population in Pingzhen and Bade Township increased sharply and thus both towns upgraded into county-controlled cities. However, the population still grew relatively slow in Yangmei. Therefore, the study aims to find out the relationship between the population migration and settlement development in Yangmei Township through researching the influences of local economic development and transportation distribution. This study focuses on Yangmei Township during the 64 years from 1945 to 2008, discussing the process of population growth and settlement development. Firstly, this study reviewed literatures regarding theories of Demography, Population Geography and Population History. Besides, related theories and influential factors of population growth and migration are researched. Secondly, this study reviewed domestic literatures and theories on population growth and migration in Taiwan and Yangmei Township, structuring the main body of the study. The second part focuses on discussing the natural and cultural environments of Yangmei Township including the landforms, the drainage systems, crops and the relationship between the place names and the settlement development. The third part focuses on the formation and development of Yangmei Township through analyzing the historical and spatial differentiations of the town resulted from the development of the land by Han people in Ching Dynasty and Japanese Colonial period, and how they influenced the economic development of the area. The fourth part focuses on population of Yangmei Township by collecting and investigating the population structure and information from Yangmei City Household Registration Office The process of population growth, transition, and migration are analyzed, and statistics of population density and settlement distribution map are also provided. The fifth part organized and classified the different types of settlement development in Yangmei Township. There are five types, including Commercial Settlement, Newly Settlement in Plain, Country Settlement, Newly Settlement in Tableland and Youth Industrial Park. All their different features are also introduced. Finally, the study is summarized by explaining the population growth, the natural and social increase of the population, the difference of inner population growth between different part of the city, the difference of population density between each villages, and the development and distribution of settlements. 盧胡彬 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 185 zh-TW
