Abstract The purposes of this study are to investigate types of perfectionism, life stress, and sense of well-being among junior high school students, to explore the predictive power of background variables, life stress and types of perfectionism on the sense of well-being, and to examine the function of types of perfectionism between life stress and sense of well-being. The sample, 351 gifted students, was randomly selected from junior high schools in Taichung City. The Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Life Stress Scale of Junior High School Students and Well-Being Scale were applied. Cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis, two-factor ANOVA, single factor analysis of variance, hierarchical regression analysis and stepwise regression analysis were adopted in data analysis. The results of this study are: a. The types of perfectionism among junior high school gifted students can be categorized as non-adaptive non-perfectionism, non-adaptive perfectionism, adaptive perfectionism and adaptive non-perfectionism. The awareness of life stress lies between no problem and little problem. The sense of well-being tends to feel happy. b. In types of perfectionism, female students score higher than male students in adaptive perfectionism. There is no significant difference of types of perfectionism between different grades, although the proportion of the number of students in different grades varies. In awareness of life stress, female students score higher than male students, senior students score higher than freshman and sophomore students. The overall sense of well-being between genders and grades show no significant difference. c. The awareness of life stress varies among types of perfectionism. The family life stress of non-adaptive non-perfectionism students is higher than students of any other types. The students of non-adaptive perfectionism scores higher in school life stress, peer life stress, stress of physical and mental development, and overall life stress than students of any other types. The adaptive perfectionism and non-perfectionism students score higher in overall sense of well-being than the non-adaptive. d. Gender, grades, types of perfectionism, and life stress can partially predict the sense of well-being, while the predictive power of variables from strong to weak are the stress physical and mental development, gender, the comparison between adaptive perfectionism and adaptive non-perfectionism, the comparison of sophomore and senior students, and the family life stress. e. Types of perfectionism serve as a significant moderator between life stress and sense of well-being. Finally, recommendations for educators and researchers are proposed based on research results. Abstract
The purposes of this study are to investigate types of perfectionism, life stress, and sense of well-being among junior high school students, to explore the predictive power of background variables, life stress and types of perfectionism on the sense of well-being, and to examine the function of types of perfectionism between life stress and sense of well-being. The results of this study are:
