The pretest-posttest equivalent group design is applied, and eight subjects with Internet addiction are randomly assigned into an experiment group and a control group. The experiment group participated in weekly chatroom-based group counseling six times, while the control group received no treatment. Behaviors of both groups were tracked for nine months afterwards. The Chen Internet Addiction Scale is used as the measurement tool for pretest and posttest processing. Test results are subsequently presented in descriptive statistics and go through Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Group therapeutic factors from the counseling sessions are analyzed through the Group Therapeutic Factor Inventory. On the other hand, qualitative data such as the subjects’ individual interviews, participation records of online group counseling, feedback from each counseling session have undergone content analysis to investigate their participation experience. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The subjects’ experience of participating in online group counseling based on the single session counseling model (1) The chatroom interface is easy to navigate and use, but it can be improved by further modifications to the application. (2) Online-based counseling has its merits in practice, yet reactions to this medium of interaction vary among subjects. (3) The single-session counseling model has its validity when applied to alleviate Internet addiction. (4) The Internet addiction treatment model is helpful in alleviating Internet addiction. 2. The effects of participating in online group counseling based on the single session counseling model on the subjects (1) Levels of Internet addition between the experiment group and the control group on the Chen Internet Addiction Scale differ significantly (2) After participating in chatroom-based counseling, the subjects with Internet addition show improvement on compulsive Internet use, withdrawal from Internet addiction, tolerance of Internet addition, and health problems. (3) Individual differences exist among the subjects in the follow-up observations after the online single session counseling model group counseling treatment. (4) Group therapeutic factors exist in the present chat-room based group counseling, among which the imitative behavior, group cohesion, universality, and imparting of information are the most evident. Finally, suggestions for further research and practice implications are drawn according to the research findings.
