expired from stroke every six seconds in the world. Around 5,700,000
people die from stroke all over the world every year. It is the top three
causes of death. Moreover, aging population, westernized diet, smoking
and lack of exercise can increase the chances of hypertension,
hyperlipidemia, obesity, diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular diseases. It
is estimated that the number of people who die from stroke will be up to
6,700,000 worldwide in the year of 2015.
According to Bureau of Health Promotion, the morbidity of stroke in
people over 40 is 4.7%; people over 65 is 7.9%. Approximately 13,000
people die from stroke and 17,000 people are in the state of disability as
result of stroke. It is the number two cause of death for the patient over
60 as well as the number five for the patient aged 19 to 59. Therefore,
stroke prevention is the vital issue for the public health in Taiwan and
the world.
This research targeted 696 people with medical records in
Neurological ward in local teaching hospital of YangMei from March
2008 to December 2010. The objective of this study is to find out the
main risk factors of people over the age of 50 suffering first-ever
ischemic stroke in YangMei district.
From the study we concluded that the risk factors for people over 50
diagnosed ischemic stroke are: hypertention, hyperlipidemia, diabetes,
smoking, heart disease and excessive drinking.
