Summary: | 碩士 === 國立體育大學 === 體育研究所 === 99 === The research explores the modernity of the contest of “8 ancient generals”, one of the folk art performances, in Pingtung’s Cihfong Temple. In methodology, it adopts literature analysis, interview and participant observation; from the literature analysis, it is found that former researches on “8 ancient generals” have been focused on the reasons why the members join in such folklore groups, those family backgrounds and learning situations in school, or analysis of social and environmental factors as well as the members history of life. However, the study would base on traditional “8 ancient generals”, its ritual process and the explanation of its culture to understand such folk arts in the modern society. While the traditional and modern meaning of “8 ancient generals” folklore in the historical changes are understood from the contest of folk arts performance in Pingtung’s Cihfong Temple, there are conclusions found as follows: 1. A fire in 1983 caused damage to cihfong temple temple, and it also led to the origin of the national contests of 8 ancient generals, after eighteen year’s reconstruction, the temple presided the ceremony, including such folk arts performance.
2. “8 ancient generals” is not a game, contest or sport, but its development in recent years has something to do with the concepts of those activities. 3. “8 ancient generals” is an activity with modernity which provides the adolescents a performing stage to show their vitality by way of contests, Most important of all, it passes the torch of traditional folklore activities.
