To stimulate innovation and creativity in students is thus the utmost important task for university presidents in the 21st century. The present study aims to explore what did university presidents whose universities had high performance in innovation do to promote creativity in students. Seven university presidents who were nominated by educational experts were interviewed for their creativity-promoting behaviors. Results showed that although each president found ways tailored to their specific university condition to resolve problems and challenges when they were promoting creativity, they also transformed their university atmosphere and inspired their faculties by their own examples, being responsible during crises, confronting dissention and pressure, taking time to find the right persons and putting in the right position, taking extra time and efforts to seek out and listen to suggestions and advices. Although facing different kinds of leadership difficulties, most presidents emphasized the important of being patient and trying their best to communicate. Results also showed that through their creative leadership, those presidents exert positive influences on their universities, members of their universities, and surrounding communities.
