As projects are becoming increasingly popular throughout companies of many different industries, it is vital to understand what factors impact and increase project performance to be able to properly manage projects. The primary goal of this study is to understand the impact Team-External and Team-Internal factors have on project performance within the context of Taiwan. The purpose of this research was to first create clear factor structures of Team-Internal and Team-External factors by running separate Exploratory Factor Analyses. Once the clear structures were formed, this study measured and compared the extent to which Team-External and Team-Internal factors impact perceived overall group project performance and perceived individual team member performance in Taiwan. This study further provides/discusses both academic and managerial benefits. My findings show that Team-Internal factors have a greater impact on project performance (Time, Cost, Quality, and Scope) than the Team-External factors. The Team-Internal factor Synergy was found to have the greatest importance on Overall Satisfaction, Overall Quality, and Desire to Keep Services. The Team-External factor Technical Tasks can be viewed as having the greatest impact on project performance as it is shown to impact both Individual and Overall group performance in 3 out of 4 performance items (it did not impact Cost). The Team-External factor structure derived from a Western setting kept 7 out of 8 original factors, showing factors external to teams may defy cultural differences and can be universally applied to project teams.
