Receivers with dual frequencies L1/L2 are commonly used for control survey operations. The prices are comparatively higher than single frequency receivers. Although with the only advantage, lower price, single frequency receivers had C/A code and L1-band which offer no elimination chance on the errors from ionosphere attracted less interest for control surveying uses. After the cancellation of SA, along with the increments both on satellites and bands, the uses of the low-cost single frequency receivers can be reconsidered. A low-cost domestic product of single frequency GPS receiver, ACC TU-0820, was used in this study. Firstly, the receiver was tested at the calibration site established by the National Land Surveying and Mapping Center to make sure the possibility of measurement. It was proved to have met the nominal precision claimed by the instrument producer. The results of baseline tests at different distances showed that it fit the bills of the regulations of the basic control surveying. The control point network located at Puli Township Nantou County where the densification work of control point network was performed with dual frequencies receivers was chosen as the study area. Single frequency GPS receivers were used at the same network. The test results revealed the feasibility of low-cost single frequency GPS receiver for performing the densification work of control point network. With the consideration of lower down the cost, it also offers the choice of using GPS receivers to perform high precision positioning works within short distances.
